Food Shelves and Community Meal Sites

Listings of Vermont Food Shelves and Community Meal Sites, along with additional resources, are organized by region.

As part of a 2008 statewide survey, the DCF Economic Services Division updated a set of listings of Vermont food shelves and community meal sites.

Vermont food shelves and community meal sites are organized by region: Southeast, Southwest, Central, Northeast, and Northwest. The listing data were confirmed with the local site coordinators in early 2008. The survey included, but was not limited to, agencies that are Vermont Foodbank partners or listed in the Vermont 211 database.

Vermont Foodbank

The foodbank is different from a food shelf. While Vermont has hundreds of food shelves, it has only one foodbank. Rather than giving groceries directly to needy families, the Foodbank is a low-cost source of food for the nonprofit groups offering such services. A foodbank mobilizes large food donations from commercial and other sources, then redistributes it at low, per-pound rates to its member agencies. The Vermont Foodbank also makes certain federal commodities available to food shelves to distribute to income-eligible households. Interested nonprofit organizations should write to the Vermont Foodbank (PO Box 254, South Barre, VT 05670), visit www.vtfoodbank.org or call them at 802-476-3341.
