Course Description:
In an on-going effort to enhance the skills of its supervisory staff, the
Vermont Department of Corrections offers a 2-day course entitled "Supportive
Supervision." The course itself is designed to provide staff a basic set of
supervisory skills for practical application with all the staff they are
assigned to supervise. Along with the skill set, the course seeks to promote an
attitudinal "frame of mind" to enhance the collaborative relationship between
supervisors and employees.
As the supervisors learn to maintain supervisory files, write supervision notes,
conduct Performance Management Interviews (PMI's), develop performance
expectations, monitor performance, give written and verbal feedback and
document on-going performance, they are challenged to communicate (verbally and
in writing) in a way that is supportive thus motivating staff to grow
professionally.
Supervisors are encouraged to see all employees as valuable and not to take
performance issues personally in order to remain invested in all employees'
success. Supervisors leave the training with a set of practical skills
delivered from a "supportive" frame of mind to apply with staff on the job.
