Suicide Prevention Training for Trainers
This is training for trainers in the area of suicide prevention. Trainers will learn how to deliver the 8-hour Lesson Plan Suicide Prevention for New Employees and a shortened lesson plan Suicide Prevention Review for stipend delivery. They will also cover Offenders that do self harm.

Training Considerations
It should be noted that this Core Competency is a high liability area and has had a large impact on our overall operation in this department.
Care should be taken to ensure that you send a high performing staff member to this training. They should already have trainer skills and have the ability to bring this training back to your local work site, ensuring high quality training for all of your local staff. Pre-requisites you should look for in selecting this person is a knowledge of class room skills, an empathy for this subject, a knowledge about suicide prevention, and enthusiasm to make their work place suicide prevention program as successful as possible.
Training Overview

Suicide in corrections

Characteristics of jails and prisons that make them prone to suicide

The signs and symptoms of a possible suicide

Times during incarceration of increased suicide risk

Events that could trigger a possible suicide

Intervention of an actively suicidal inmate

The proper use of the INS screening instrument.

Understanding why offenders do self-harming behaviors
Program Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Teach the 8-hour Lesson plan Suicide Prevention for New Employees at the academy
- Teach the shortened lesson plan Suicide Prevention Review for local stipend training
- Identify suicide risks in a correctional setting
Target Audience
Both Field and Facilities. This training is for a correctional Core Competency. All participants in this training are required to teach this program back at their work site and at the VT Correctional Academy. Participants selected for this training program must have the ability to teach. Each Facility has two training slots they should fill them with one from security person and one casework person. Each Field site has one training slot. Priority is given to recertify previous instructors first. All participants should have a basic knowledge about Suicide Prevention and be familiar with all directives on this subject.

Mike Wall and Lisa Johnstone need to attend as they are mentor Instructors and will be providing instruction.
Registration Deadline
All participants must be registered by February 1st 2008.
There is Pre-reading that will be sent out to all registered participants.
All Applicants must go thought their Local Training Coordinator or Work Site Manger.

Participants should be ready to take a pre-test of basic Suicide Prevention knowledge based upon the Pre-reading.
- By completing this course you are agreeing to train Suicide Prevention at your local work site and at the academy. If you are not willing to do this please do not apply.
- All applicants must have the approval of their local training coordinator or local work site manger.
- Class starts at 0830
- Attire is Class room professional (Collard shirt and slacks, no blue jeans or tee shirts) or uniform.
- Lodging will be provided for anyone that has to travel over 50 miles to the training. Meals will be provided on site. Mileage will be reimbursed though the expense account process.

- Please let us know if you are traveling over fifty miles and will need lodging.

Free to all Correctional Personnel that have their work site mangers approval to attend.
