Mentally ill clients present numerous risks for professionals. This workshop is designed to provide a practical map through the minefield of uncertainty in the prediction of violence toward others. Dr. Resnick, who has been a consultant in many high-profile cases including those of Scott Peterson, Andrea Yates and the “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, will present the latest research on violence prediction, the demographics of violence, and the specific incidence of violence in different psychiatric diagnoses.
Dr. Resnick will discuss predictors of suicide, "the suicidal ladder," and the value of "no suicide contracts." The seminar will also address issues including the reduction of risk for malpractice liability for failing to protect potential victims from patient violence as well as for failing to prevent suicide. New data on violence in stalkers will also be covered.
Course Learning Objectives:
1. Learn to identify predictors of violence to self and others
2. Improve interview techniques in the assessment of “dangerousness.”
3. Recognize legal issues in risk evaluations for suicide and homicide.
4. Classify stalkers and assess their risk of violence.
