Learning Objectives
- Attendants will be able define co-occurring disorders using the DSM-IV with a focus on the 5-6 most common disorders, self-medication processes, implications of current brain plasticity research, emotional self-regulation issues, and how the disorders may interact.
- Attendants will be able to identify symptoms associated with substance abuse and dependence that may mimic symptoms of mental health conditions, and be able to work toward improving skills that may better help define the nature of the problem.
- Attendants will understand the clinical implications of co-occurring disorders in case formulation and treatment planning, and be able to apply a sample of evidence-based interventions.
Day One Focus: Etiology, Common Co-Occurring Disorders, Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model, Basic Neuroanatomy, Self-Efficacy, Moving People from Precontemplation and Contemplation, Conditioning, Motivational Skills, Case Formulation, Treatment Planning, Sampling of Evidence-Based Interventions, Helper Self-Care, and Skills Practice.
Day Two Focus: Sample Research Review Supporting Mindfulness, Mindfulness Skills, and Brain Plasticity Implications, Learning to be Happier, Emotional Self-Regulation Skills, Helper Self-Care, and Evidence-Based Skills Practice

Presenter: Anthony Quintiliani, Ph.D, is a Doctoral level Clinical Psychologist with over 35 years experience in community clinics, schools and higher education. He is also a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He is the Clinical Director of Howard Center, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Quintiliani is also Adjunct Graduate Lecturer at The University of Vermont, and Core Graduate Faculty at Southern New Hampshire University.
