This three hour teleconference event addresses the challenges and opportunities in applying ADA requirements in Correctional Settings.
Target Audience:
o Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents of Facilities
o Superintendents of Probation and Parole Offices
o Correctional Facility Shift Supervisors
o Caseworkers and Parole and Probation Officers
o Community Service Team Leaders
o Qualified Healthcare Provider Supervisors (MHM and PHS)
o Community High School of Vermont Special Education staff
Learning Objectives:
1.) Describe the historical and social context of the Americans with Disabilities Act and explain how this law applies to inmates and offenders under the supervision of the Vermont DOC.
2.) Define: “Disability” and “Reasonable Accommodation”
3.) Identify behaviors that suggest an individual may have a cognitive or psychological disability.
4.) Give examples of effective communication techniques to employ with people with cognitive or psychological disabilities.
5.) Explain how ADA Orientation is done in facilities and field offices
6.) Identify three situations where an individual under DOC supervision could be screened for a disability.
7.) Describe the process whereby an inmate or offender may request an accommodation.
8.) Identify the uses of forms associated with Directive 107.01
9.) Using the Responsibility Tables describe summarize the staff roles under the ADA Directive.
